Toronto’s arts community includes a growing number of young entrepreneurs who are running their own businesses as promoters, MC’s, managers, filmmakers, graphic and fashion designers, visual artists, producers, and more. These entrepreneurs are essential to the vitality and sustainability of the cultural industries in Canada and worldwide. Up In Your Business is a program dedicated to supporting this scene and is once again taking place as a part of the Manifesto Music & Arts Festival in September. Young entrepreneurs will set up booths to showcase their business and sell their wares at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday, September 21, 2008. The day will also include a major outdoor concert. The event will be a significant sales, promotion and networking opportunity. Cultural industry representatives and heavyweights will be in attendance.

Up In Your Business wants to support youth to pursue their aspirations in the art of business. If you are a young arts entrepreneur between the ages of 16 and 30, register now – space is limited. To apply, you must be:

If you are a young entrepreneur, running your own arts-based business or social enterprise – this event is for you!
This full-day, professional development opportunity will include networking, access to mentors, and skills-based information sessions on business and enterprise.

Learn the tricks of the trade from one of Canada’s most successful young entrepreneurs. Damien will speak about how he got started in the fashion industry, and will be available for a question and answer discussion. Lunch provided.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 101
With Akshay Shirodker, coordinator of the Summer Company program at YouthInc, and MBA student at Schulick School of Business.
• Learn the basics of financial management for your small business by learning basic financial reporting, accounting, and management of the inflows and outflows of your small business. Learn about how get the 'buy-in' from potential investors.

3:15 TO 4:15 p.m.
HOW TO PITCH YOUR IDEA TO GET RESULTS
With Derek Luis, senior producer at Sun TV, and Boonaa Mohammed, spoken word artist.
• Given the right opportunity, you may have only two minutes to impress an industry executive and sell them on yourself and your business. Learn from an artist who has perfected the art of pitching, and an industry executive who has heard the good, the bad and the ugly – on how to make an effective pitch.

4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT 101
With Anique Jordan and Karla Smith-Brown from KEYS (Knowledge Equals Youth Success), a youth entrepreneur development company.
• As a entrepreneur the necessity of thorough project and event planning can sometimes be overlooked. This workshop will provide you with the tools needed to plan and manage any major or minor events for your company of organization. From developing your initial budget to aiding the final clean up we'll cover it all.
